Advent 2018 – Harry’s Letter

Dear Friends,

Advent is about the coming of a Hero. We all love hero stories, whether they involve Superman, King Arthur, Jack Ryan or Wonder Woman. I believe they echo the deep longing in human hearts for the ultimate hero, and I further believe that hero is Jesus the Messiah. Unlike Spiderman and company, Jesus is a real human being. Unlike Captain America, who has some crazy powers and skills, Jesus is all-powerful. Unlike James Bond, who is ever battling an evil super-villain, Jesus came to destroy the root cause of all evil. Unlike Ironman and the rest, who always use violence, Jesus uses his strength to lay down his life.

Our world seeks heroes, imaginary or otherwise, who will fight injustice, crime, environmental destruction and greed. Of course, violence, self-centredness, irresponsibility and greed spring from the sinfulness of human nature which we all have in common. God chose to strike to the heart of the matter and to deliver all those who put their trust in Jesus, through the cross, from the power of sin. This is strange and nonsensical to many, but it is the wisdom of God.

The Advent narratives are full of this message. The angel says, “Unto you is born…a Saviour (Deliverer, Rescuer, Hero) who is Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:11 Joseph is told that Mary “will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 The name ‘Jesus’ in English derives from the name ‘Yeshua’ in Hebrew, which means ‘God delivers’.

We believe also in the second advent of Jesus when he will complete what he started:

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.  But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.  For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.  The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”  1 Corinthians 15:22-26

So it is that we celebrate the coming of Messiah, the true Hero, and anticipate his return in the season of Advent. Our 3 congregations will join together on December 2nd, the First Sunday in Advent, at Lochlin United Church at 10:30. Please join us as we share the Lord’s Supper and worship Christ the King.

In Christ’s Love,
